Graham and Cheryl
It’s interesting how life works. I received a phone call from a woman who said she was helping her friends to organise a small wedding on the 8th April. She rang me at the beginning of April. As a celebrant, I understand the legalities of having marrying in Australia – a month’s notice is required unless it’s been given a ‘shortening of time’ by a Magistrate. I explained this to the woman and the criteria which are accepted – illness is one of them. “Oh, that won’t be a problem, Graham has cancer.” I asked Denise to tell me more.
At the age of 15 Graham worked with a builder – and asbestos. In November 2014, he was diagnosed with Malignant Mesothelioma – the same disease had killed his brother. After watching his brother battle the cancer with chemo and radiation, Graham decided he would not accept the same fate and he refused the treatment. After 18 years together, he and his lady Cheryl decided it was time to tie the knot.
Of course, how do I not help? I told our MWW suppliers and the wedding was organised literally in 10 minutes – that’s how awesome these people are!
When I first met up with Cheryl and Graham, they didn’t quite understand that the whole wedding was gifted – and that’s when Cheryl’s tears first started. They were so touched at other’s generosity. Graham said, “But it’s usually us that give”. I said, “Well now it’s our turn to give to you.” Every supplier this gorgeous couple met, were touched by the tears, the gratitude and the humbleness. And when Cheryl walked down the aisle and Graham reached for her and hugged her and held her like there was no tomorrow – that’s about when I lost it. It was so touching and I’m so honoured I was able to experience that special moment! The ceremony was beautiful and the eloquence of Marriage Celebrant Bill Scurry touched everyone! Update: Sadly, Graham passed on the 26 August 2015.
